Transport systems increasingly assume that every passenger carries a charged smartphone. Mobile tickets are useful for many people, yet travel remains an essential public service. Children, visitors, older adults, low-income passengers, and people whose devices are lost or broken need another reliable way to pay.

A good kiosk should accept common payment methods, display complete fare information, and print or encode a ticket without forcing account creation. Instructions should be available in several languages and remain readable in bright light. Buttons, screens, and card readers need to be reachable from a seated position.

Machines should also explain failures clearly. A message such as “transaction unavailable” gives no guidance about whether the problem involves payment, the printer, or the network. Passengers need a visible alternative, such as another machine, a staffed counter, or permission to board and pay later without a penalty.

Digital systems can reduce queues and operating costs, but they should not remove the last independent option. An app may offer discounts, journey history, or quick repurchasing while the kiosk preserves basic access for everyone else.

Public transport works best when a missed connection is not caused by a missing device. Technology should widen choice rather than make one private tool the entrance requirement for a public network.

Operators should test kiosks with people who rarely use digital services, not only with regular commuters. A technically functional machine may still fail when instructions disappear too quickly, payment is declined without explanation, or the printer runs out of paper. Observing real users can reveal barriers before they cause missed journeys.
